Do you need a boat licence to rent a boat in Croatia?

Licences, skippers and licence-free boats – what you need to know before renting in Murter

It is the question we hear most often at our office in Murter: "Can I drive the boat myself?" The short answer: for most motorboats you need a valid boat licence – but if you don't have one, there are still plenty of ways to get out on the water.

When do you need a licence?

In Croatia, the person at the helm of a motorboat must hold a boat-handling licence – the Croatian "voditelj brodice" certificate or an equivalent licence recognised in Croatia. Many national licences from other European countries are accepted. If you are unsure whether yours qualifies, send us a photo of it before your holiday and we will check.

Always bring the original licence and an ID document when you pick up the boat.

Boats you can drive without a licence

Croatian rules allow adults to drive small rented boats with an engine of up to 5 kW (about 6.8 HP) and a length of up to 5 m without a licence, staying close to the shore. They are perfect for a relaxed family day: exploring the coves around Murter, a swim in a quiet bay or a trip to a beach you can't reach by car.

Our small Pasara with a 5 HP engine is the classic choice for this kind of trip – ask us about the details when you book.

No licence? Rent with a skipper

Any of our boats can be booked with a professional local skipper. That means you can take a fast RIB or the 12-person Stingher all the way to the Kornati without holding a licence yourself – and you get a local guide who knows the best bays, konobas and the wind of the day.

Or join the excursion

If you simply want to see the Kornati without organising anything, join our daily excursion on the traditional wooden boat "Torcida" – with lunch on board and swimming stops included.

Getting a Croatian licence

Licensed training centres and harbour master's offices along the coast offer short courses followed by an exam. If you plan to spend many holidays on the Adriatic, it can be worth it.

Quick summary

  • Most motorboats: valid boat licence required.
  • Small rented boats (up to 5 kW / 5 m): adults may drive them without a licence close to the shore.
  • No licence: book a skipper or join the Kornati excursion.
